Joanna Cooke is an artist who has been painting formally for 18 years, although she has drawn and pursued a multitude of creative activities her whole life. She’s a published illustrator and writer of children’s books and has 25 years teaching experience, running a corporate training consultancy teaching communication and leadership skills. She has also been a musician and singer in rock bands and the Philharmonia Choir. She works and lives in Kirstenhof where she shares her home, office and studio with her family and animals.
Jo has participated in numerous art exhibitions and has been a member of the South African Society for Artists since 2011. She exhibits regularly through SASA at Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town, and also from her home and various exhibitions. She works in watercolour, oils, pencil, pastel, ink and digital media.
“I believe in exploring any form of creativity, and I’m constantly reinventing myself. I believe people shouldn’t be limited to any particular style, and should experiment to spread their creative wings. Painting or drawing is the most peaceful, rewarding way to spend time and re-discover yourself.”
Jo has an instinctive understanding of each person’s unique talents, needs and personality. Her approach to students is highly flexible, allowing them to develop in any direction and grow in confidence, yet she doesn’t compromise on imparting a good technical knowledge and understanding of art mediums, technique and theory.
